Keep Florida Rockin Coalition

Dear ,

As you may have heard, a recent Miami federal court ruling is jeopardizing the supply of rock that is essential to meeting Florida's growing transportation and housing needs.  Recognizing that a shut-down of Lake Belt mining in Miami-Dade would have serious implications for all of Florida, the Florida Chamber has joined with Floridians for Better Transportation (FBT) and other statewide associations to form the "Keep Florida Rockin!" coalition.   By early next week, the coalition will launch a website (www.KeepFloridaRockin.org) and help publicize the transportation and economic implications of a possible shut-down of Lake Belt mining.

According to the Florida Department of Transportation, the production loss resulting from a shut-down in Lake Belt rock mining would be:

  • 100% in Districts 6 and 4 (all of Southeast Florida),
  • 50-75% in Districts 1 and 7(Southwest Florida and the Tampa Bay Region), and
  • 25-50% in Districts 5 and 2 (Central Florida and Northeast Florida)

While we are sure it is well-intentioned, this possible federal judicial action could negatively impact transportation in most of the state.

The Keep Florida Rockin coalition simply wants to ensure that the federal court has all the necessary information to make the right decision for Florida's future.
